university of leeds medical student profile

Rebecca Dodd

The six week elective module offers you the freedom to explore different areas of medicine that interest you. I wanted to use the opportunity to do something completely different to my usual clinical placements in the UK. I knew I wanted to experience medicine in a developing country; I travelled to Ethiopia and worked in a hospital there for two months assisting and shadowing doctors on the wards.

The placement gave me a real insight into the culture in Ethiopia and I experienced first-hand the challenges medical professionals and patients face in a developing country.

It was an eye-opening experience which made me appreciate the medical profession and technology we have here in the UK.
