Chanu Gunasekara
- Course: Medicine and Surgery MBChB
I went to Sri Lanka for my six week elective module, spending three weeks in paediatrics and three weeks in general medicine. The electives were clinically based so my days consisted of ward rounds, taking histories and examining patients. Examining and speaking to these patients improved my knowledge of pathophysiology and management of common conditions.
I was also exposed to many longterm conditions and tropical diseases. The elective was a great learning opportunity and a bit of a shock, especially the contrast in care provided. Some days a single bed would contain two-three patients and those requiring intensive care had to be managed on medical wards due to lack of resources. The experience has helped me to appreciate the different healthcare systems in two very different parts of the world.”
