Patient Carer Community
Chronic Illness and Disability
This activity is with 4th year students; each student spends 6 weeks at placements in oncology and primary care learning about cancer and chronic diseases.
During those 6 weeks the students also have some classroom based teaching which includes one session on "Patient Experience of Chronic Disease Management".
During this session the volunteer Patient, who uses their own experiences of managing a chronic condition, will spend about an hour talking to a group of 10-14 students about their disease and answering questions from the students. The students then create a poster which demonstrates what they have learnt from the patient; this will then be presented to the whole group.
The types of chronic conditions which are considered for these sessions include heart failure, stroke, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, epilepsy etc.
