What we do

Over the past 25 years the Leeds CTRU has evolved, from conducting a few small scale regional clinical cancer studies in a portacabin as part of the NHS funded Yorkshire Regional Cancer Organisation into a flagship UK academic Clinical Trials Unit. Our large portfolio now includes national and international clinical trials research that has changed and is shaping ‘gold standard’ healthcare on a national and international level.

The portfolio includes high quality, innovative, randomised, controlled trials, methodological and applied health research across a number of clinical specialties including cancer, stroke, cardiovascular disease, older people, skin, musculoskeletal disease and primary care.

The portfolio evaluates a range of interventions including drug, surgical, device, imaging and complex interventions, in early/feasibility trials through to late phase trials with prestigious grant funding from research councils (NIHR, MRC), charities (including CRUK, Myeloma UK, Yorkshire Cancer Research), and industrial partners.

Our work has contributed to improving the design and delivery of clinical trials through involvement in the development of the NIHR Clinical Research Networks and the establishment of the UK network of UKCRC Registered Clinical Trials Units. Crucially the portfolio has impacted on clinical practice, informing national and international clinical guidelines and ultimately improving the quality of and length of patients’ lives.

Five key factors have been critical to the success of the Leeds CTRU:

  1. Strong academic and operational leadership
  2. A focus on clinical questions of importance to the NHS
  3. Collaboration with service users to inform the clinical question, trial design and trial delivery
  4. The development and establishment of the concept of strong inter-disciplinary ‘team science’.
  5. Development of trials specialists in statistics, trial management, data management, information systems, quality assurance and business management

Our success is a result of bringing together passionate multi-disciplinary teams and in keeping an open mind to new ideas and opportunities.

We continue to be passionate about clinical trials research; our vision is to continue to develop and apply novel methods to answer challenging health and social care questions of importance to patients and the NHS. We will continue to lead the way in developing and delivering innovative trials to produce robust and comprehensive clinical trials which shape ‘gold standard’ diagnostics, treatments and service delivery across the world.
