Choosing Leeds

Why did you decide to study at the University of Leeds?

I visited the University of Leeds upon an open day with my Sixth Form. I adored the layout of the university, the facilities all within one campus makes everything easily accessible. Baines Wing caught my eye with the clinical skills suite being an exact replica of a typical hospital environment. The campus is only a short walk from the city centre, being right on the doorstep of many great areas for nightlife, shopping and transport links. I felt that the quality of teaching would be of a high standard from seeing how passionate and dedicated all the staff were towards their chosen specialities. I can now emphasise how committed the staff are and how they are willing to go above and beyond to best prepare us for our future careers.

Why did you choose to study your chosen course?  Why is it important for you to be studying it?

I long for a rewarding career where every day I can go home knowing that I have made a difference to at least one person’s life in some way, however big or small. I thoroughly enjoy speaking to new people, caring for others and I thrive in a challenging environment. All these aspects align with a career in nursing, and that is how I knew that Adult Nursing was the right course for me.

What has been the highlight on your course and at the University and why?

I have got to say my first placement. It has allowed me to visualise where I want to be in the future and what opportunities there are within nursing. I have been able to apply theory to practice, develop my transferable skills and identify what I can bring to this profession.

What would you say to someone thinking of coming to study here?

You will love it! Change can be daunting but it will be the best decision you will ever make. Leeds is an extraordinary city, full of diversity and culture, with so many opportunities awaiting for you to embark on.

What do you think of the city of Leeds / Yorkshire?

A beautiful city encompassing a mixture of green spaces and urban areas, giving you the best of both worlds! Coming from a small town to a big city like Leeds has been a drastic change but one that I love and am continuing to find more amazing places every day.

Leeds Laidlaw Scholarship

How did you find out about the Leeds Laidlaw Scholarship? What made you decide to apply?

A member of the School of Healthcare emailed us regarding the scholarship. I contemplated applying for some time and I finally built up the courage, I am so thankful that I did! It was the combination of both leadership and research that made me want to apply to this opportunity. The ability to work with a leading academic on a research project sparked my attention along with a global wide network of peers. It has given me the chance to work on an area I am truly passionate about in further detail alongside my studies. I wish to gain a leadership position within my future career, and I knew that this opportunity would enhance my professional development.

What was the application process like?

The process consisted of three components: Application (Question Form, CV, Tutor Reference), Group Interview (Discussion tasks given) and an Individual Interview (no Information was given beforehand).

Did you receive any help or advice from members of the School of Healthcare with your application?

My personal tutor gave me feedback on my application form and stayed in contact with me throughout the process if I needed any additional support.

What will your project explore?

My project is focused upon mental health research. The title is

‘Improving involvement and recruitment of informal carers in mental health research: An integrative literature review’

What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying?

Give it your all, especially at the group interview. Show your true self and emphasise how you would be perfect for a leadership position in your future career. During group interviews, make sure to get your point across without discouraging other members of the group or interrupting them. Emphasise that you align perfectly with the values of the Laidlaw Foundation by giving examples and demonstrating your strong communication skills within both interviews. Most importantly if you work hard, you can achieve anything!

Placements

Thinking about your placement; what has been your most rewarding placement so far?

J24 – Women’s Health Unit. I worked with a diverse age range gaining experience within Gynaecology, it was extremely interesting!

Please describe what type of placements you have been on so far?

My placements have been at Leeds General Infirmary within the Radiology Theatres and the Women’s Health Unit at St James’ Hospital.

What attributes do students need to be successful in practice?

Being proactive is a key skill all nursing students need to have, always look for learning opportunities rather than waiting for them to come to you. I believe that if you have a desire to learn and can communicate and listen effectively, you will succeed in practice.

Thinking about your future

What are your aspirations after graduation?

I aspire to be an Advanced Nurse Practitioner or further explore the field of Nursing Education. The areas I am interested in include A&E and palliative care.

What impact has this programme had on your future career aspirations?

It has opened my eyes to how many avenues there are within Nursing and what subject areas interest me the most. I have shadowed various healthcare professionals during placement, gaining an insight on their daily duties. I visualised myself within each job role to determine which career path I am most suited to.
