Why did you choose the School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds? 

I chose the School of Healthcare due to positive feedback from family and friends.

Why did you choose your course?  Why is it important for you to be studying it? 

I chose my course as I’ve always found helping people and building relationships to be interesting and satisfying. I really enjoyed studying Sociology at secondary school and family members and close friends have also pursued a career in social work. It felt like the right choice. 

What were you doing before you started studying here?

I was studying for my A-levels at a local sixth form alongside working in a local care home for adults with special needs. 

What has been the highlight of the programme/course? 

Building relationships with peers and being on placement which I have found both challenging and fulfilling. I have enjoyed dedicating myself to my practice.

Did any particular modules or projects impress you? 

The decision-making module in the second year really impressed me. The research and reading connected to it made me consider academia and the importance of future research. It also provided me with the skills to approach the final year dissertation so it was an all-round useful module. 

What support have the tutors and other staff given you? 

I have had a lot of support from my tutor and staff, both academic and personal. Some issues in my personal life during placement meant my tutor ensured I was supported and prioritised at all times. Staff are always happy to provide feedback and answer questions regarding essays and examinations which I find very helpful and make sure to make use of. 

How do you plan to use what you have learned here? How will doing the course benefit you/the organisation you work in? 

The course has informed me how to practice, the research behind social work and how to fit in with a team and build relationhips, so I will incorporate all of what I have learned. 

What do you plan to do after graduation? 

I plan to gain my qualification after an assigned year of experience and practice another year before possibly looking at wider training or international opportunities. 

What would you say to someone thinking of coming to study here? 

I would say what you put into the course and placement is what you ultimately get out of it. 

What do you think of the city of Leeds/Yorkshire? 

Leeds is perfect for a student, especially for studying studying Social Work given its outstanding council. The city is perfect in size for enjoying leisure time and there are lots of activities available.
