Lucy James

My current role is Senior Video Producer, and Head of Original Programming at CBS Interactive, working on the GameSpot brand in San Francisco. I appear as an expert on outlets such as the BBC, Sky News, and The Guardian to talk about video games. 

I originally wrote about video games for Leeds Student (now The Gryphon), as well as for a few online blogs, before applying for an internship at CBS Interactive's London offices. After working there for a month, I returned to 
University, and freelanced for various publications while finishing my degree. Upon graduating, I moved to London and worked as a host/writer/producer for an international television channel that specialises in video games. I worked there for a couple of years, before returning to GameSpot to take up the position of Video Producer, creating video series about video games, movies, television shows, and comic books. I also did work with the BBC and was the video games correspondent on Sky News' Swipe show. 

Last year I was promoted to Senior Video Producer and transitioned to the San Francisco office, where I produce and manage our slate of Original Programming.

A degree from the School of Psychology has benefited me in the workplace as while my career isn't necessarily directly connected to Psychology, there are definitely certain skills that I picked up while studying that have proved useful, such as writing clearly and concisely, how to source, but also analytical and critical thinking, particularly when it comes to delicate subjects such as the relationship between video games and real-world violence. 

If I could, the advice I would give to myself whilst studying would be to take advantage of the multitude of societies and activities the University offers. I picked up valuable experience and contacts during my time at Leeds, whether it be writing for Leeds Student, or appearing on LSTV programming. All of which were invaluable on my CV when I began looking for work.
