Megan skelton BSc Psychology study case study 2018

Megan Skelton

I chose to do my degree here due to it having an excellent reputation, interesting content and being located in an exciting city. I loved the course; there was a great selection of modules in social, cognitive and biological psychology taught by leading researchers in those fields. I found the lecturers enthusiastic and supportive and they were happy to discuss their work with me even outside of timetabled hours. This encouraged me to be involved in various projects via the Research Experience Student Undergraduate Scheme thereby contributing to published studies.

During the summer after my second year I was awarded funding to work as a research assistant investigating motor learning. It was exciting to be part of a research team, learning first-hand how a piece of research is carried out and using the department’s state-of-the-art equipment, such as a robotic arm. I found the experience highly beneficial for my third year dissertation and career. When I got my final year results I discovered I would be graduating with a First Class Honours degree and top of the year; hard work does pay off! Since graduating I have worked as a research assistant on rewarding projects including a smoking intervention for secondary school students and, currently, a reading comprehension intervention. I am taking time out to travel around South America and after this plan to apply for a PhD to pursue a career in academia. My experience at Leeds encouraged my passion for research; for discovery, problem solving and helping people.

A Psychology degree from Leeds prepares you for many career paths because you graduate with a sought-after combination of communication skills, scientific understanding and critical thinking from a respected university. I am so glad I chose Leeds and can’t recommend it enough!
