Rameeta Bhamra
- Course: Dental Surgery MChD/BChD, Oral Science BSc
The staff has been incredibly supportive, they are very friendly and approachable. They really give you the confidence and prepare you well as a clinician.
I choose to study at the School of Dentistry as firstly the relaxed environment at the interview spoke volumes about the school as a whole, the staff and students were all very accommodating. Compared to other dental schools, you receive more hands on clinical exposure as a first year student. As well as this, the integrated Masters programme which is unique to Leeds really swayed my decision when choosing Leeds.
The highlight of the course for me was attending the outreach clinics in Bradford, Beeston and Hull between the 4th and 5th year, as you get a real feel for what it’s like to be in practice. I also thoroughly enjoyed my 2 week oral surgery and maxfax placement at the end of 4th year, as you get the opportunity to assist in head and neck cancer operations and understand what it’s like to work in a hospital.
The clinical skills modules in year 2 and 3 allowed us to practice on the phantom heads which allowed us to build on tasks we had to complete on the MOOGs/simodonts in year 1. The clinical practice modules built our confidence and allowed us to tie everything we had learnt in all the modules together to devise treatment plans and treat patients in a safe manner. Also, the personal and professional development modules over the five years has allowed me to build on communication skills which are vital in establishing a good rapport with patients and your team, but also when it comes to interviews and applying for jobs.
For those thinking to study here, you’ll have an incredible time, in the city, the university and at the school of dentistry. Leeds is a great city, not too big and not too small but has everything you need. Having grown up and studied in London I was apprehensive about moving to the North, but I can honestly say it was probably one of the best decisions.
