Research and innovation
Major investment in the development of researchers and the academic infrastructure at the University of Leeds makes for exciting times for research and academic endeavour in the School of Dentistry.
Inspired by emerging and future disease patterns and the increased complexity of comorbidities, our goal is to translate innovative interdisciplinary research to transform patient and population quality of life. To achieve this, the School has identified three priority areas of focus including oral biology and the basic dental sciences, digital dentistry and the relationship between oral and systemic health. Find out more about how our research groups work across these key areas.
Our research
Our internationally recognised research creates specialist insight into an array of dental disciplines. We deliver groundbreaking research to improve dental care and deliver real impact.
Dental educational research
Dental education research at Leeds looks into the way that dental education and scholarship is developing and encourages a reflective approach to dental education.
MoreDental public health and health services research
Our Dental Public Health and Health Services research group focuses on research across oral health issues related to public health, oral migration and inequalities, and oral health in the UK and overseas.
MoreBiomaterials and tissue engineering
The Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering research group aims to better understand the repair, regeneration or replacement of skeletal tissues. Its focus is primarily in bone, cartilage, teeth and complex tissue.
MoreBiomineralisation
The Biomineralisation research theme encompasses skeletal tissue biology from formation to destruction and genotype to phenotype at all stages of the translational pipeline.
MoreMicrobiology and cell biology
The Microbiology and Cell Biology research group aims to understand the roles that microbes and host responses play in infectious disease.
MoreTranslational and clinical research
The Translational and Clinical Research Unit is a £1.7m clinical academic centre combining the School of Dentistry (University of Leeds) with the Leeds Dental Hospital (Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust). It provides world-class research equipment and resources to enable expert insight.
MoreResearch impact
We use interdisciplinary expertise to understand the fundamental mechanisms of oral and other diseases, particularly musculoskeletal, in order to improve treatment, restore function and support prevention. Our leading research spans both basic dental sciences and clinical dental sciences, producing insightful and innovative research through world-leading staff and state of the art facilities. This results in positive impact both for our research partners and for dental health in society.
