Engaging Experts by Experience in data analysis on research into health inequalities impacts of reducing primary care overprescribing
Our NIHR funded project looked at the impact on patients of changes to prescriptions for antibiotics or strong painkillers. We worked with people with lived experience of the health conditions our research was looking at to conduct the analysis of our interview data. In groups we used thematic analysis to explore the interview transcripts. We also created I-Poems from the data. Findings from this analysis added depth, richness and personal perspective contributed to overall study results. The I-poems produced provided a powerful method sharing study results. Feedback from the group showed high levels of satisfaction.

Preparing to develop and test an equitable weight management intervention to improve outcomes for seldom reached groups affected by breast cancer: FORALL
FORALL (hosted by the University of Leeds and University of Hull) is exploring ways to develop healthy living and weight management support for underserved women living with and beyond breast cancer. ‘Underserved’ refers to women who are often not represented in research and/or services. We are working with women from the following backgrounds: South Asian, Black African, Black Caribbean, and those living on a low income. Our work is underpinned by a community advisory group comprising of women from these groups, and involves a scoping review, plus interviews with women, healthcare professionals, and community service providers, and then co- design workshops.

What do patients and caregivers think about pelvic radiotherapy in prostate cancer?
This interview study is part of an NIHR Advanced Fellowship to improve radiotherapy treatments for prostate cancer. To ensure research inclusivity, during the application stage and in conducting the research we have held community meetings with Leeds Gambian Society, Woodhouse Community Centre, Leeds Prostate Cancer Support Group and Dodgy Walnut, bringing together a group to shape the study design, participant-facing materials and interview topic guides. These groups include people at greater risk of prostate cancer and/or who are under-represented in research, including older people, people with Afro-Caribbean heritage, people with LGBTQ+ identity and people with experience of socio-economic deprivation.
