A career to be proud of
“I liked biology at school, and I liked the idea of helping people.
I thought about healthcare and that’s when I started considering nursing. A mental health nurse came into my sixth form and gave an hour-long talk. An hour was all it took for me to imagine myself doing that job! I knew I wanted to be a nurse.”

Placements: at the heart of the action
“My highlight of the course so far is, without a doubt, the placements. I felt prepared to start my first placement thanks to the time I’d spent in the simulation suite.
You’ll experience a real range of settings on placement, and as part of that, you’ll come to find the right fit for you. Placements provide so much opportunity, that, once you come to graduate, you’ll have a broad spectrum of skills and experience to draw upon.
For me, the most important thing is learning how to interact with a service user. Sometimes I’ve wondered, ‘Can I do this?’. But placement builds your confidence and develops your clinical skills in a way like no other. I feel such a sense of pride for making a difference to people’s lives through the care I’m giving. You'll be a part of their lives forever, and that’s part of the fulfilment. The relationships you build; the different types of people you’ll meet; the different ages and demographics.”

Male nursing: a bright future
“My experience as a male nurse has been very positive — I’ve not faced any discrimination at all. It’s felt very natural, and I feel a real part of the team.
The other male nurses on the course all spend time together but we’re all one big friendship group. Nobody is going to judge you as a male nurse. People find it interesting and encouraging and I’ve come across a lot of male nurses on my placements.
You’re not alone, you’re going to be supported. You're not going to be the odd one out.”
