UCAT Accessible Video Transcript

[0:00-0:03] (Upbeat, gentle music begins)

Visual: An aerial shot shows a grand, historic university building with a prominent clock tower under a cloudy sky. The camera slowly pans out, revealing more of the surrounding cityscape and red-brick buildings. The scene transitions to a woman sitting in a modern clinical training room with a hospital bed in the background. She is smiling and begins to speak.

Olivia Rumble: Applying for medicine or dental surgery can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be!

[0:04-0:09] Visual: The video cuts to a shot of male and female students in a dental training lab, working with phantom heads. The text "Complete the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) exam" appears in a maroon box over the footage.

Olivia Rumble: If you’re applying for the Gateway Year to Medicine, Medicine and Surgery or Dental Surgery, you’ll need to take the UCAT exam.

[0:10-0:22] Visual: The shot returns to Olivia Rumble. A caption identifies her: "Olivia Rumble, Admissions Manager, University of Leeds." She continues to speak directly to the camera.

Olivia Rumble: It’s a computer-based admissions test that we – along with many other universities – use as a starting point for selection.

[0:22-0:34] Visual: The view remains on Olivia. Text appears on screen listing the two key areas of the test. "1. Cognitive subtests in Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning" and "2. The Situational Judgement Test".

Olivia Rumble: You’ll be tested on 2 key areas. It takes about 2 hours to complete and you can only sit it once in the cycle. It’s also important to note, you must do the UCAT within the same year you submit your UCAS application.

[0:35-0:40] Visual: An upward-facing shot shows the grand entrance of the university building seen earlier. The text "Apply through UCAS" appears over the image.

Olivia Rumble: Once you’ve got your UCAT results, you can then apply through UCAS.

[0:41-0:45] Visual: The shot returns to Olivia speaking in the clinical room.

Olivia Rumble: This is your chance to submit a personal statement that details exactly why you’d love to study medicine or dentistry at Leeds.

[0:46-0:52] Visual: A montage of quick shots shows students engaged in learning. A smiling young woman participates in a clinical simulation. Two female students in a lab, wearing safety goggles, work together with a piece of equipment.

Olivia Rumble: Make sure all your qualification details are correct, and your personal statement really showcases your passion for the subject you’re applying for.

[0:53-1:00] Visual: Olivia is shown briefly, followed by a shot of students walking down a bright, window-lined university corridor. The text "Come for an interview" appears over the scene.

Olivia Rumble: So, you’ve done your UCAT, applied for your course and, if successful, you’ll then be invited to an interview.

[1:01-1:06] Visual: The video returns to Olivia, who speaks for a moment before a cutaway shot shows a female student in a lecture hall, focused on writing in her notebook.

Olivia Rumble: Selections for interviews are based on both your UCAT scores and your other academic qualifications.

[1:07-1:11] Visual: The view returns to Olivia speaking.

Olivia Rumble: At Leeds, we use a Multiple Mini Interview format and your interview could either be face-to-face or online.

[1:12-1:17] Visual: A sequence of shots shows student life. A student wears a blue t-shirt with "School of Medicine, University of Leeds" on the back. A female student in blue scrubs explains a medical instrument to her peers. Another student in scrubs talks to a group around a demonstration table.

Olivia Rumble: At this stage, we’ll have seen many of your academic capabilities, so this interview is really your chance to display your knowledge and aptitude for the course.

[1:18-1:20] Visual: The shot returns to Olivia speaking.

Olivia Rumble: Next is the exciting part – getting an offer!

[1:21-1:26] Visual: A bright, sun-flared shot of the university building. The text "Get an offer" is displayed in a maroon box.

[1:27-1:37] Visual: Olivia is shown speaking, followed by a montage of students in learning environments. Students work at dental simulation stations. A female student smiles as she learns to use a stethoscope on a peer. A tutor with short white hair gestures as she teaches a small group of students.

Olivia Rumble: We base our offers solely on your interview performance – not your UCAT scores or other academic grades. That’s why it’s so important to really show us what you’ve got in the interview.

[1:38-1:50] Visual: The view returns to Olivia speaking.

Olivia Rumble: If you’ve been successful, you’ll get an email from us congratulating you on your offer. As our medicine and dentistry courses are highly competitive, you may narrowly miss out on an offer. But don’t worry! We do have a wait list that you could be selected for.

[1:51-1:56] Visual: A shot of a university building entrance, where a large banner reads "Congratulations on your offer!" The text "Visit an Offer Holder Day" appears over the image.

[1:57-2:09] Visual: Olivia speaks, followed by a montage of scenes from an offer holder day. Students chat with a student ambassador at an outdoor information point. Others walk towards a door labelled "Clinical Skills Classroom 4." Students are shown in the dental lab and walking across a sunny campus plaza, wearing "Student Ambassador" t-shirts.

Olivia Rumble: Whether you’ve been to an Open Day or not previously, offer holder days are another chance to explore the campus, check out the facilities you’ll be using throughout your studies – and get all your questions answered by current students.

[2:10-2:15] Visual: The shot returns to Olivia speaking.

Olivia Rumble: If you’re an international student – or can’t make any of the offer holder days – we do have loads of content online such as the virtual campus tour to explore our facilities.

[2:16-2:21] Visual: A shot of a traditional red-brick university building, framed by green leaves. The text "Occupational health check pre-registration form" is displayed.

[2:22-2:31] Visual: Olivia speaks to the camera.

Olivia Rumble: Next, we’ll ask you to complete your occupational health check form around the start of July. You’ll need to provide details about your health, along with your vaccination history, so make sure you’re prepared and have this information ready to go when we contact you.

[2:32-2:35] Visual: A blurred shot of students sitting at desks in a large examination hall. The text "Take your exams" appears.

[2:36-2:38] Visual: The view returns to Olivia speaking.

Olivia Rumble: The final hurdle is taking your exams. Just remember, you can only do your best, so good luck!

[2:39-2:41] Visual: A blurred shot from behind a female student looking up at the university clock tower. The text "Results day!" appears.

[2:42-3:13] Visual: Olivia is shown speaking, looking reassuring.

Olivia Rumble: Results day – when all your hard work finally pays off! It’s an exciting time – but it can also be very stressful. You’ll usually receive your results either in person or via email, depending on your school – so you’ll know if you’ve achieved the grades you were aiming for. If you have – great news! If not, it’s still important to check UCAS to see whether we’ve been able to accept you onto the course with the grades that you’ve achieved. Or we may be able to make you an offer for an alternative course instead.

[3:14-3:20] Visual: A final, quick montage shows students enjoying university life: chatting at an outdoor cafe, practicing a clinical procedure on a mannequin arm, walking and talking together on a tree-lined path, and ascending a large outdoor staircase on campus.

[3:21-3:29] Visual: The shot returns to Olivia for her concluding remarks. She is smiling warmly.

Olivia Rumble: We hope you’ve now got a clearer idea about what to expect when applying for medicine and dental surgery. At Leeds, we’re always here to help. So, if you do have any questions or concerns about the application process, please contact us in admissions.

[3:30-3:34] Visual: The music swells as the video closes with another aerial shot of the university campus. The text "Find out more at courses.leeds.ac.uk" appears, with an arrow pointing to the web address.

Olivia Rumble: Good luck and we hope to see you soon!

[3:35-3:39] (Music fades out) Visual: Black screen.
