LICAMM Our Research
Our Research
We work to understand and treat cardio metabolic diseases, a number of cardiac and circulatory disorders, linked to comorbidities such as diabetes or obesity. We view cardiometabolic disease as whole body and whole life problems that adversely affect wellbeing, societal contribution and life expectancy. We particularly focus our research on understanding the pathobiology of cardiovascular disease and how this is exacerbated by the comorbidity of type 2 diabetes. This deadly combination can reduce life expectancy by up to 15 years and is highly prevalent in the north of England. Our integrated teams of fundamental, data and clinical scientists work across university and hospital settings with the aim of helping people with, or at risk of, cardio metabolic disease. We work in partnership with patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) groups to ensure what we do is relevant to the community we serve.
What we do
We are interested in how disturbances in physical and metabolic homeostasis lead to related disorders including atherothrombosis, heart failure and vascular disease. We are further interested in how these disorders are phenotypically distinct where they have the added burden of diabetes. We hope that, informed by new knowledge, we can develop and implement new treatments and diagnostics.
We approach the heart, blood vessels, blood and metabolic organs as interacting components of a complex integrated body system that is shaped in its structure and function by metabolic events throughout life, from the embryo to old age. Our work encompasses the spectrum of scale from molecular and cellular studies of cardiovascular biology, organ and systems biology, animal models of disease, through to diagnosis and interventional trials.
