School of Medicine - MMI FAQs
On this page you will find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. If you can’t find the answer to your question, please email our admissions team who will be happy to help.
How do I get to campus? Where should I go when I arrive?
Interviews will be held at The Edge on the University of Leeds campus (Google Maps link). If you are travelling to Leeds by train, you can reach The Edge using The Leeds City Bus from the train station, which stops on Clarendon Way just 200 yards from The Edge, opposite the LGI. Alternatively, a number of buses run to Woodhouse Lane which is a short walk through campus.
If you are being dropped off by car, the driver will not be charged for driving into the car park as long as they do not stay longer than 30 minutes. The same applies for when they return to pick you up.
Is there parking on campus?
There is no parking available on campus. The nearest public car park is Woodhouse Lane, approximately 15 mins walk from the interview venue. Please plan your travel to allow for possible delays and ensure you are mindful of external factors such as train strikes that may impact your journey time.
Will campus tours be available?
We will not be running formal campus tours, but you will have an opportunity to visit the Worsley Building, which is the home of the Medical School, if you visit our Medicine Marketplace after your interview.
If you would like to explore before or after your interview, here is a campus map and suggested route for a self-guided tour. Remember to bring a warm coat as Yorkshire can be very cold in January!
What should I bring with me?
We will provide pens, paper and clipboards for the MMI. Food and drink will not be provided, so please make sure you have eaten enough before your interview – hunger doesn’t help with pre-interview jitters! If you would like to have a drink with you during the interview, please bring a bottle of water with you.
There will be an ID check before the interview, so please ensure you have a form of ID with you. Acceptable forms of ID are:
- Valid, unexpired passport (photo of your passport not accepted)
- Driving licence
- Provisional driving licence
If you do not have access to any of the forms of ID above, please ask your UCAS referee to email us well in advance of your interview, with your date of birth, UCAS ID and a photo of you confirming that it is a true likeness of you. Please keep school festive closures in mind and request this as soon as possible to avoid issues when you arrive to check in.
If you do not present one of the above forms of photo ID on the day, your interview will not go ahead.
Apart from the above, please try and bring as little with you as possible on the day. During your interview there will be an area where coats and bags can be left, however this is at the owner’s risk.
What should I do if I can’t attend on the day?
If you realise once the MMIs have begun that you are unable to attend for any reason, you must complete this form as soon as possible.
A copy of your responses will be sent to your referee for verification and we will contact you by Wednesday 15th January with next steps. Absences will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
What should I do if I arrive late?
Please email ugmadmissions@leeds.ac.uk including your UCAS ID, name, booked slot time, and the time you are likely to arrive. We will respond as soon as we can to advise you of what you should do.
Can I contact the University during the festive period?
Please note that the University of Leeds will be closed from the 20th December 2024 until 2nd January 2025. We will be unable to answer any emails between these dates.
Is there any financial support to help with travel costs?
For applicants from a Widening Participation background, a travel bursary is available to cover the cost of travelling on public transport to attend your interview. This covers up to £100, with a minimum claim of £10. Please visit our travel bursary webpage to check whether you are eligible and for details of how to claim. If you are eligible, the travel bursary team will then process your claim; please note that claims must be received within three weeks of your interview date or they will not be processed.
Is there a dress code?
You should dress the way you would for any other formal interview. We would recommend that you wear something smart but we do not expect you to buy anything especially for the interview. Please also ensure your outfit is comfortable as you will be moving around during your interview.
Please also remember to bring a warm coat with you to ensure you’re comfortable when travelling to the interview.
Will you award extra marks if I have extenuating circumstances on the day?
By attending the MMI and checking in, you are declaring that you are fit and well enough to undertake the interview. We cannot award you extra marks to account for illness or other extenuating circumstances on the day – if you feel that unforeseen circumstances will impact your ability to undertake the MMI, you should complete the Absence Form, which will allow your circumstances to be confirmed by your UCAS referee for us to consider.
Can I bring my parents/guardian/a friend?
Parents, guardians and other guests cannot enter the MMI hall where the interviews are taking place but we understand that in some circumstances guests may be accompanying you to campus. We can direct your guest to the Marketplace (Worsley building, Level 9). Once you have completed your interview a member of staff or student ambassador will accompany you to the Marketplace.
Is the interview wheelchair accessible
Yes, the interview venue and Medicine Marketplace are both fully accessible and we have a circuit which has larger stations to accommodate wheelchair users. The Medicine Marketplace is also wheelchair accessible.
Is there somewhere to get lunch?
Yes, there is a cafe on Level 7 of the Worsley Building which will be open. There is also a Tesco Express around 5 minutes away if you exit the Worsley Building on Level 4.
The Edge is a 15-minute walk from the centre of Leeds, where there are lots of restaurants.
