I got into my current profession through my network. Something I've learned since graduation is how important networking is and how it is never too early to start building connections. I also had 18 months of experience in a rotational graduate scheme at Royal Bank of Canada which gave me lots of diverse work experience.
A degree from the School of Psychology has benefited me in the workplace as a psychology degree has been fundamental to building successful relationships in the workplace and learning how to understand and collaborate with people. My knowledge of statistics from Psychology has also been very helpful when interpreting and presenting client data. I have a broad knowledge of many different topics from Leeds and I have found that the skills I have built from written communication, statistics and science has given me a competitive edge as it demonstrates that I am able to adapt to any given task.
If I could, the advice I would now give to myself whilst studying would be to start building your network as soon as possible. Even if you think you want to work or move abroad (as I did), it will still be useful for you to establish connections as you never know what opportunities may arise from it! Work hard but enjoy learning and soak in every bit of information. The access to resources and people at Leeds is amazing and you will miss it when you leave.
