Profile

I am a dual-certified Consultant in Radiology and Interventional Radiology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and an Honorary Professor of Interventional Radiology (IR) at the University of Leeds. I received my specialist training in Clinical Radiology in Leeds. Subsequently I undertook a fellowship in Interventional Radiology at in University College London and Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. I have been a Consultant in Leeds since October 2003 at one of the largest diagnostic and interventional radiology department in the UK.

I am academically active and major research interests include image guided cancer treatment, therapeutics focused ultrasound and leading the translation of innovative Med Tech for cancer treatment. I have published extensively and lecture regularly at national and international meetings.

I am an enthusiastic IR educator and founded the annual Yorkshire Imaging and Interventional Radiology Symposium (2020-) for medical students. I have inspired a team of medical students to perform a cross-sectional survey that has highlighted the need for greater exposure to IR at medical school

As a passionate champion for equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), I have co-founded the EDI committee for British Society of Interventional Radiology (2018-21). I have strived to motivate all IRs to help in closing the IR gender gap issue as highlighted in my collaboration with Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) (2017)- The Interventional Radiology (IR) Gender Gap: A Prospective Online Survey by the CIRSE

Research interests

Interventional Radiology/Oncology :

1) Precision targeting of cancer under imaging guidance using navigational/robotic tool

2) Translating innovative ablative technology from bench to clinic

I am a core member of the NIHR Surgical Med Tech Co-operative led by Professor David Jayne (LIMR) and have led the development of research & innovation for Interventional Oncology programme at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. I have also collaborated closely with Professor Adel Samson (LIMR) to evaluate the immune system effect post cancer ablation.

My research is clinically focused involving translating innovative ablative medical technology in the setting of providing minimally invasive cancer treatment for a range of solid tumours. My research output has direct impact on service improvement in cancer treatment and providing evidence of the interventional oncological treatment translation efficacy from bench to post market adoption. This has directly influenced regulatory approval, national commissioning and international cancer treatment guidelines. I have developed an international reputation in Interventional Oncology. 

In 2021, I led the #Hope4Liver trial in UK (NCT04573881)- translating image guided histotripsy for the treatment of primary and metastatic liver cancers and this was featured on BBC Click- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHxbF91DZmw

In March 2023, I successfully translated the Global First CAIN trial (NCT05432232) using image guided histotripsy to treat renal tumour and was featured in ITV news
