Brain Imaging:

Functional Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy (fNIRS)

The Brain and Behaviour Lab houses an Oxymon Mk III (Artinis Ltd) fNIRS system that can record oxygenation levels in the brain. It does this using near infra-red light that can penetrate unhindered to the underlying gray matter. The system can record differences in absorption between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.

Brain Stimulation:

Transcranial Brain Stimulation (TMS)

Brain stimulation has been found to be effective for improving cognitive outcomes in patients with cognitive decline when applied over the prefrontal cortex. It achieves this by using magnetic fields placed close to the scalp resulting in the stimulation of neurons under the magnetic coil.

Eye Tracking:

Eyelink 1000Hz eyetracker

Eye-tracking and other behavioural recordings can be used to understanding cognitive performance by monitoring reaction times and accuracy to stimuli presented on a screen. It uses a high-resolution camera placed close to the eye for accurate measurements.
