Profile
I was appointed to Chair of Mental Health Nursing at the School of Healthcare, University of Leeds in 2015. My research focuses on improving the quality and safety of mental health care, through a focus on reducing coercion and restrictive practices, patient and professional safety in mental health services, developing effective and therapeutic mental health services.
I am currently a Chair of the HEE-NIHR Doctoral Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship (DCAF) scheme and an Adjunct Professor at the Forensic Mental Health Research Unit Middelfart (RFM), Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Science, University of Southern Denmark & Psychiatric dept. Middelfart, Mental Health Services in the Region of Southern Denmark. I am a Registered Nurse Teacher with the Nursing, Midwifery Council (NMC) and I am active within Mental Health Nursing Academics (UK).
I have attracted a substantial portfolio of funding from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and other funders (>£8 million). I have a strong international reputation and have published more than 100 peer reviewed journal articles. I have been cited in and contributed to the development of a number of policies in the UK and abroad. I try to engage with the public about my work and mental health more broadly through twitter, blogs for the @mental_elf, and the mainstream media.
I previously completed terms of office for Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust as a non-executive director, Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Senate, Yorkshire and Humber RfPB panel, NIHR post-doctoral panel, and editorial boards for the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing and Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing.
