Profile

John was appointed to Chair of Mental Health Nursing in 2015. John's research focuses on reducing coercion and restrictive practices, patient and professional safety in mental health services and effective and therapeutic mental healthcare. Each theme has attracted substantial research funding and the findings have been widely distributed through teaching and learning, clinical practice and policy. He has used a range of methods from qualitative studies to complex trials. Scales which he developed (ATAMH 33) is being used in at least 15 countries in a diverse range of settings. The good practice manuals which he developed have been evaluated, cited as examples of good practice, and influenced clinical practice in the UK and abroad. The training package for patients, service users and carers to promote research awareness and understanding has been cited by the MHRN and NICE as an exemplar of good practice.

John is a Non-executive Director at Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. He sits on the Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Senate. John is a member of the NIHR post-doctoral, and Yorkshire and Humber RfPB panels, and editorial board for the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing. He is a Registered Nurse Teacher with the Nursing, Midwifery Council (NMC) and is active within Mental Health Nursing Academics (UK). John has considerable experience at supervising students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. John is currently supervising numerous PhD students.
