Professor John Baker
I was appointed to Chair of Mental Health Nursing in 2015. My research focuses on reducing coercion and restrictive practices, patient and professional safety in mental health services and effective and therapeutic mental healthcare.
Each theme has attracted substantial research funding and the findings have been widely distributed through teaching and learning, clinical practice and policy. I have used a range of methods from qualitative studies to complex trials.
Scales which he developed (ATAMH 33) is being used in at least 15 countries in a diverse range of settings. The good practice manuals which I developed have been evaluated, cited as examples of good practice, and influenced clinical practice in the UK and abroad.
The training package for patients, service users and carers to promote research awareness and understanding has been cited by the MHRN and NICE as an exemplar of good practice.
I am currently a Chair of the Doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship (DCAF) scheme and an Adjunct Professor at the Forensic Mental Health Research Unit Middelfart (RFM), Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Science, University of Southern Denmark & Psychiatric dept. Middelfart, Mental Health Services in the Region of Southern Denmark.
I previously completed terms of office for Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust as a non-executive director, Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Senate, Yorkshire and Humber RfPB panel, NIHR post-doctoral panel, and editorial boards for the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing and Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing.
I am a Registered Nurse Teacher with the Nursing, Midwifery Council (NMC) and is active within Mental Health Nursing Academics (UK). I have considerable experience at supervising students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I am currently supervising numerous PhD students. I would welcome enquiries from students wishing to study a higher degree in any of the above research themes.
