Monty Losowsky Memorial Lecture 2022

The Annual Monty Losowsky Memorial Lecture returned to campus on Thursday 13 October.

Last year due to COVID restrictions the event was online. This year however, being face-to-face saw over 100 students, staff, alumni and museum staff in attendance. This event comprised a lecture competition with three shortlisted students from School of Medicine delivering their presentation followed by this year’s keynote “Parables of the Pandemic” delivered by Professor Jonathan Van-Tam Kt, MBE, FMedSci.

The judging panel comprised Professor Mark Kearney, School of Medicine; Professor Simon Kay, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Thackray Museum of Medicine; Dr Neil Kaiper-Holmes, Thackray Museum of Medicine, Professor Fay Bound-Alberti, University of York and Paul Thomas, The Leeds Salon.

The judges found it hard to make a decision as the standard of all three entries was excellent. In the end, the prize went to Jessica Jaffrey who gave a lecture entitled “Abortion: Do the Ethics Matter?”

Runners up were Amy Wilson - From Hirschfield to Tavistock: A History of Modern Trans* Healthcare and Tabitha Ashley-Norman - Displaced doctors living in the UK: a potential partnership that will give purpose to individuals and power to the NHS.

The annual lecture is an event hosted by the School of Medicine, in partnership with Thackray Museum of Medicine.
