What we do
The Cancer Epidemiology Group uses large scale datasets to research cancer, particularly bowel cancer. We have extensive experience of using routine, NHS datasets to inform screening, treatment and service planning. We have a particular focus on demographic variations, such as age inequalities.
Aims and objectives
We quantify the characteristics of cancer management across the NHS. By understanding variations in the management of cancer we provide evidence to guide interventions that will help to eliminate inequalities and improve survival from the disease. We do this by linking routine NHS datasets to generate population-based datasets that include all cancer patients in the country and detail as many aspects of their management as possible. We then analyse these data to identify processes and procedures associated with best practice and improved patient survival. We work closely with patient advocates and our colleagues in Public Health England to maintain our ethical standards and abide with regulatory requirements.
