Dr Alaa Bani Hani wins second prize at the Health Education England Academic Presentation Day
Dr Alaa Bani Hani, Clinical Lecturer and Specialist Registrar in Paediatric Dentistry, has recently been awarded second prize for her poster presentation.
Alaa won the second prize for her poster presentation at the Health Education England Academic Presentation Day in York for the Clinical Lecturers (CLs) category. Her poster was titled: 'Raised in Yorkshire (RiY): Supporting School Children to Undertake Oral Health Projects'. The Academic Presentation Day is held to inspire clinical lecturers and Academic Fellows to present their research from both medical and dental disciplines.
Research in Yorkshire (RiY) is a collaborative project with local school-based within a community that is 'seldom heard'. The research aimed to provide sixth form students (RiY research fellows) with the opportunity to gain experience of undertaking a small research project as part of their Extended Project Qualification, supporting the disadvantaged school students with their applications for university and future career.
It highlighted the oral health practices and dental anxiety among pupils attending secondary school in disadvantaged areas, where there are a high proportion of young people eligible for free school meals. Research in Yorkshire has also inspired a local school to examine oral health amongst pupils.
