Laura is a Professor of Public Health and Education Innovation, Director of the Institute of Medical Education and Deputy Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health

Laura’s expertise is in education, leadership, and innovation in health management. She is committed to supporting the development of individuals and teams underpinned by Athena Swan values. Her professional interest is in population health and well-being, starting from community activism in the voluntary sector through to education and research, now realised in her work in the School of Medicine through academic leadership.

Laura has previously held a number of roles as an independent chair or expert invitee in the health and not-for-profit sector and she is currently serving as the University of Leeds Non-Executive Director on Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, for which she is Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee.

Research interests

My primary focus is medical education and specifically education in primary care and public health.  I hold a University Student Education Fellowship exploring ways of internationalising the student experience, particularly for medical undergraduates.

In my former role as Head of the Centre for Innovation in Health Management, I led a professional leadership and change programme. I am an educational supervisor for Specialty Registrars in Public Health and have contributed to papers arising from their work. I have also led education research into the Social Accountability of two Medical Schools.

Student education

I have extensive taught student education experience within the University sector and I provide sessions on public health policy, the politics of the NHS, and leadership in health management for specialty trainees.
