Profile

I am a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology and a Health Data Reserach UK Fellow at the Insitutte of Data Analytics and Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine at the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. 

I qualified in medicine at the University of Cambridge and obtained a MA (Hons) in neuroscience. I then worked as a junior doctor in London before undertaking speciality training in Cardiology, most recently at Leeds General Infirmary. After becoming a member of the Royal College of Physicians I was awarded a Clinical Reserach Training Fellowship by the British Heart Foundation and a PhD Enrichment Scheme award by the Alan Turing Institute. I completed a PhD at the University on the use of machine learning to predict atrial fibrillation in the general population using routinely collected datasets in primary care.  

My research incorporates the use of large routinely-collected datasets to answer clinical questions and develop and validate prediction models, particularly in the area of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation after stroke, and cardio-renal-metabolic disease. I am also now translating these prediction algorithms into clinical trials. My clinical interests are in prevention, early detection and screening for cardio-renal-metabolic disease. I supervise PhD, MD, and MSc students. 

I was awarded the Young Investigator Award at the British Society of Heart Failure Annual Meeting in 2024. I was a finalist for the Young Investigator Award at the European Heart Rhythm Association Congress and for the President’s Prize in Cardiology at the Royal Society of Medicine in 2023. I was also a finalist for the Young Investigator Award at ESC Preventative Cardiology  awarded ‘Best of the Best’ in the Prevention section at the British Cardiology Society Annual Meeting in 2024.

I am an Associate Editor of the European Heart Journal Quality of Care and Clinical Outcomes. I have been a primary and co-applicant on successful grant applications with the British Heart Foundation, National Institute of Health and Care Research and Leeds Hospital Charity. I am also a member of the e-cardiology working group of the European Society of Cardiology, and the Future Leaders in Health Forum at the Leeds Institute of Data Analytics. I am a member of  the British Cardiovascular Society, Royal College of Physicians of London and the European Society of Cardiology.

Research interests

Leveraging machine learning in population-based data to identify individuals at high risk of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and cardio-renal-metabolic disease. I am now translating these prediction algorithms into clinical trials. I also use of population-based data to understand disease incidence, outcomes, and care quality.
