Our research themes

The School of Healthcare brings together a community of dynamic and successful applied health and social care researchers, committed to making a positive difference to the lives of people who use health and social care services or work in these environments, including contributing to research-led education. We have a reputation for conducting and delivering world-leading applied health and social care research through our people, research environment, research activity and approaches. Our success stems from our commitment to responsive multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration, addressing questions that matter for health and social care and translating knowledge to increase uptake.

Our single overarching aim is: to undertake internationally excellent research and innovation focusing on ‘Ageing Well’ and ‘Quality and Safety’. In doing so, we will address questions that (i) matter to, and improves the lives, experiences and outcomes of, people who use health and social care in the UK and beyond, and/or (ii) enhances the delivery and organisation of health and social care.

Contributing to our themes of ‘Ageing Well’ and ‘Quality and Safety’ we have a programme of funded research focusing on: musculoskeletal disease; mental health; medicines optimisation; care homes; health and social care workforce; patient safety policy; and enabling technologies. Our research is underpinned by participatory, appreciative and co-design approaches (working with health and social care partners, including health and social care service users and the public), using a full range of research methods to address our questions and generate impactful high quality research outputs.
