Quality and Safety

The Quality and Safety research theme is interdisciplinary and we undertake high-quality applied research to understand and improve the quality and safety of health and care services. We address questions that matter to people and communities, patients and families, health and care professionals and organisations, health and care professional educators and policymakers.

We are from a range of disciplines and backgrounds including pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, psychology, and health services research. We have expertise in: qualitative and quantitative methods; mixed-methods; evidence synthesis; co-design; patient, public and community involvement and engagement in research; intervention development and evaluation; and randomised controlled trials.

Our research spans health and care services and settings and focuses on several connected topics, for example:
•    The safe and effective use of medicines by patients and health and care professionals
•    Safety in mental health services
•    Engaging patients, families and the public in understanding and enhancing the quality and safety of care
•    Patient safety measurement and monitoring

We are primarily funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the charity sector. We lead research within the NIHR Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Research Collaboration and are also affiliated with the Wolfson Centre for Applied Health Research.
