Dr Joe Hicks

Profile

I am a Lecturer in Medical Statistics working in the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development, which I joined as a Medical Statistician in 2015. I am primarily involved in applied research related to improving public health, health services and health systems in low-and middle-income countries, as well as teaching on the Nuffield’s degree programmes. Before joining the department I completed a PhD in population and community ecology at the University of Leeds in 2015.

Research interests

I am interested in applied research related to improving public health, health services and health systems in low-and middle-income countries, and specifically in using robust quantitative methods to address those research problems in challenging contexts, by developing and evaluating pragmatic and effective interventions. Previously, I have been primarily involved in research addressing antimicrobial resistance, non-communicable and communicable disease care, and health system responsiveness.

Currently, the main research projects that I am working on are:

• "Community-led Responsive and Effective Urban Health Systems" (CHORUS), which is a research project consortium involving teams from the University of Leeds, the University of York, HERD International (Nepal), ARK Foundation (Bangladesh), University of Ghana, BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health (Bangladesh), and the University of Nigeria. CHORUS is focused on improving urban health systems primarily for the urban poor in low- and middle-income countries. CHORUS is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. • “Community Solutions to Antimicrobial Resistance” (COSTAR), which is exploring the ways in which community dialogues can be embedded into the health system infrastructure to contribute to the prevention and control of antimicrobial resistance in Bangladesh and Nepal. I teach quantitative methods and supervise student projects on the three degree programmes run by the Nuffield. You can read more about our programmes here.

I am also a PhD co-supervisor for Emmanuel Leshak together with Bassey Ebenso and Matthew Allsop. Research title: Psycho-social impacts of community-based management of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in Nigeria.
