Research interests
Research in my laboratory uses pharmacological, transgenic and gene-targeted strategies to determine the causality of maladaptive platelet functions in human disease in order to provide new sites of therapeutic interventions that target platelet driven disease processes. My laboratory focusses on two interrelated areas.
Platelet function and thrombotic risk in cardiometabolic diseases
Our work is focused on patient benefit and in particular understanding the basis of abnormal pletelt function in the context of cardiovascular disease including acute coronary syndromes, insulin resistant states and peripheral vascular disease. Our work in focused on “deep phenotyping’ of blood platelets using molecular, biochemical and functional approaches
The role of atherogenic lipid stress in promoting platelet hyperactivity and thrombosis.
This programme for work is focussed on understanding the role of scavenger receptor CD36 in promoting platelet driven arterial thrombosis in a hyperlipidaemic environment. We are currently exploring the signaling pathways linked to this receptor, its role in promoting platelet hyperactivity in patients at risk of thrombosis and developing therapeutic agents to mitigate this risk.
Research in my laboratory is funded by the BBSRC, British Heart Foundation, Heart Research UK and the MRC.
