Profile

I studied medicine at the University of Leicester, graduating in 2002. After completing BHF-funded PhD at the University of Leeds in 2009, I commenced a clinical lectureship in cardiology at the University of Leeds. I was awarded a 7-year BHF intermediate clinical research fellowship in 2013, which included a one-year visiting fellowship to the laboratory of Peter Carmeliet in Leuven, Belgium. I completed my training as a cardiologist in 201, becoming an honorary consultant cardiologist with expertise in heart failure and cardio-oncology. Beyond my research programme, I am Deputy Pro-Dean for Research in FMH, Associate Director (Research) in LICAMM and Co-Director of the Leeds BHF 4-year PhD programme.

Research interests

My research uses data science, laboratory and clinical studies to understand the basis of cardiometabolic disease, including how combinations of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases interact. This aims to generate molecular insights about human disease, which can be applied to develop and target improved preventative approaches.

Student education

I am Co-Director of the BHF 4-year PhD programme hosted by LICAMM. I supervise clinical and non-clinical PhD students along with intercalacting MBChB students. I contribute to undergraduate teaching of MBChB and CUPS students.
