Professor Chris Bojke

Profile

Chris is an experienced empirical health economist with a background in economic evaluation, econometrics and health policy with an interest in applying econometric techniques to health technology applications to expand the economic evaluation framework to accommodate non-standard evaluations.  For example to account for patient heterogeneity and/or use of observational data.

He has specific research interests in the health economics of:  wound care, mental health, maternity services; patient safety and health care workforce and he has extensive experience in using large and complex datasets such as the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES)

Previous Roles

Prior to joining AUHE in September 2016, Chris was a Senior Research Fellow in the Health Policy team at the Centre for Health Economics, University of York from 2005 - 2009 and as a research fellow in the primary care team from 1999 to 2004. In between CHE stints, Chris was a senior economist at the National Foundation for Educational Research and director of Pharmerit Ltd, a private consultancy firm providing HTA services to the pharmaceutical industry.

Current Research Interests

The use of large scale observational datasets (such as HES) for the purposes of HTA and health policy evaluation/decision making using quasi-experimental approaches such as controlled Interupted Time Series methods

The use of panel-data econometric techniques alongside clinical trials to identify important idiosyncrasies such as patient heterogeneity, response over time and non-random drop-out or switching.

The cost-effectiveness of Health Care Staffing inputs including staffing of Inpatient Mental Health Wards and the health economics of maternity services - managing demand; patient choice and service provision

Aside from the academic attainments listed here Chris has extensive experience of economic evaluation in the private sector.  He was recently responsible for the health economic component of the successful industry submission of Holoclar for the treatment of LSCD to NICE.  Holoclar was Europe’s first licensed stem cell technology.  He is used as a health economist expert for NICE in their early scientific advice committees and has featured in a number of industry organised mock NICE appraisals and ad boards for conditions ranging from migraine to lung cancer.

Chris also presents one-day courses on health economists for non-health economists for Copenhagen Business School – SIMI executive courses, Roboleo, IQVIA and  PwC.
