Dr Russell Frood

Profile

I am a clinical academic radiologist working as a Clinical Trials Fellow at the University of Leeds and Honorary Consultant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. I completed my PhD at the University of Leeds (2023), developing imaging biomarker–based outcome prediction models in lymphoma. My research focuses on quantitative medical imaging, imaging biomarkers, and body composition metrics as prognostic tools in cancer. My work integrates clinical trials, real-world NHS imaging data, and AI-based methods, with the aim of translating imaging biomarkers into routine clinical decision-making.

Research interests

My research focuses on the development and validation of quantitative CT imaging biomarkers to improve risk stratification, treatment decision-making, and outcome prediction in cancer. A major theme of my work is CT-derived body composition imaging (including sarcopenia and adiposity), explored as markers of physiological reserve, treatment tolerance, and prognosis.

I work at the interface of clinical trials imaging, real-world NHS imaging data, and AI-based analysis methods, with a strong emphasis on translation into routine clinical workflows. My research is closely aligned with multi-centre clinical trials and national research infrastructure, including collaboration with Cancer Research UK and imaging biomarker initiatives at the University of Leeds.
