Mr Henry Davies

Profile

I initially trained in Aerospace Engineering, completing a BEng at the University of Manchester, before moving to Hangzhou, China, where I studied Medicine (MBBS) in Chinese and undertook laboratory research into molecular mechanisms of spinal cord and brain injury.

I subsequently completed an MD in Cardiac Surgery before returning to the UK, where I was appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Vascular Surgery. I have since completed a PhD at Maastricht University examining end of life care in vascular surgery and am now an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Vascular Surgery at the University of Leeds.

My research focuses on improving care for patients with advanced vascular disease, particularly those living with chronic limb threatening ischaemia (CLTI) and aortic aneurysmal disease. I am an invited speaker on pallioative and end of life care in vascular surgery and have presented this work at multiple international conferences. My research has contributed to the development of this emerging area of vascular practice and has helped build the evidence base around the care of patients with advanced vascular disease.

I currently co-chair European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) work developing European guidance on palliative and end of life care in CLTI.

I lead TOPIC (Topical Morphine for Ischaemic Pain in CLTI), a programme developing a multicentre randomised feasibility trial of topical morphine for severe ischaemic pain in CLTI, building on systematic review, observational and clinician-survey research in this area.

I also lead VISTO (Vascular Industry Sponsorship and Trial Outcome), a meta-research programme examining the relationship between industry funding and outcomes in randomised vascular surgical trials.

Research interests

My principal research interests are palliative and end of life care, symptom control and decision-making in advanced vascular disease, particularly CLTI and aortic aneurysmal disease.

My wider interests include peripheral arterial disease, clinical trial methodology, meta-research and causal inference.
