Dr Olly Brown

Profile

I am an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology at the University of Leeds.

I graduated in medicine in 2017 and subsequently undertook postgraduate medical and cardiology training in Yorkshire on a clinical-academic track. I was appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Cardiology at Hull York Medical School, before moving to the University of Leeds to undertake a PhD investigating the role of subcutaneous adipose tissue in the pathogenesis of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

My PhD research demonstrated that diabetes is associated with endothelial cell senescence and dysfunction within human adipose tissue and investigated the consequences of this for adipose tissue metabolism. Following completion of my PhD, I was appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology at the University of Leeds, combining my ongoing research with higher specialist training in cardiology.

I have presented my research nationally and internationally, including at the British Cardiovascular Society Early Career Investigator Award, which I won in 2026, and as a finalist in the European Society of Cardiology Young Investigator Award.

I also serve as the current President of the British Junior Cardiologists' Association and am involved in cardiovascular research, education and training nationally.

Research interests

Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms linking adipose tissue dysfunction with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. My research combines human adipose tissue phenotyping, endothelial and adipocyte biology, transcriptomics, and large-scale population datasets to identify mechanisms, biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets in cardiometabolic disease.
