Professor Darren Shickle

Profile

Darren is Professor of Public Health at the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. He is also an Honorary Consultant within Public Health England.

Darren has been at Leeds since 2005. He was previously Clinical Reader in Public Health at the University of Sheffield. Between October 2003 and March 2004 he was seconded as a Senior Medical Officer in the Scientific Developments and Bioethics Division at the Department of Health where he had particular responsibility for end of life issues, consent and international bioethics. As part of that secondment, he represented the UK on the Council of Europe CDBI Bioethics Committee.

Since 2003 he has been an ethics reviewer for the European Commission.

In 1996/7 he was a Harkness Fellow based at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore and Georgetown University, Washington DC. While in the USA he also worked at the US Department of Health and Human Services.

He has research links with various European countries, New Zealand, United States of America, Canada and Hong Kong.

Darren is currently a co-author on the European Competencies Framework for Public Health Workforce (Eco-FPHW) and a member of the Trailblazer Group developing the Public Health Practitioner Apprenticeship.

He has been author/co-author on 14 European and Royal College Reports.

Research interests

Darren’s main current specialist interest is public health workforce development and public health leadership. He also has a research interst in ophthalmic public health and he is working across the ophthalmology and optometric sector on various policy and research projects related to eye health. His other ongoing interests include public health ethics, public health genetics and sexual health/HIV
