Professor Laura J Hardie

Profile

Professor Hardie graduated  from the University of Aberdeen with a BSc (Hons) in Biology (1983). She subsequently conducted her PhD (1991) in Aberdeen examining the effects of antioxidant vitamins  and fatty acids on the immune system. After  a period of postdoctoral research researching cytokine genes, she moved to the Rowett Research Institute in 1995 to take up post as a Senior Scientific Officer  investigating the newly discovered adipocyte hormone, leptin and its role in energy balance and metabolism. In 1997 she joined the Molecular Epidemiology Unit at the University of Leeds as a senior research fellow. Her research subsequently focussed on the molecular epidemiology  of Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer, including the role of diet, DNA damage and genetics in the disease process. In 2007 she was promoted from principal research fellow to Reader and in 2018 she was appointed to Professor of Nutrition, Metabolism and Health.
