Research interests

The areas of active research for me and my group include:

  • Improving the care of surgical nerve disorders (e.g., major nerve injury and nerve compression):
    • Quantitative MRI for diagnosing neuropathy and monitoring recovery
    • The cost-effectiveness and prognostic utility of different tests (ultrasound, electrodiagnostic and MRI) for planning surgery
    • Real-time postoperative monitoring in patients’ own environment
    • The safest and most effective operations to restore function
  • Optimisation of advanced methods for diffusion-weighted MRI:
    • Reducing SMS-induced bias
    • Investigation denoising-induced bias
    • Creation of AI-based joint segmentation and registration networks
    • Preprocessing to mitigate EPI-induced distortions

I also supervise, support and collborate on numerous other research projects with colleagues and students on the following topics:

  • Topical skin antiseptics for the prevention of infection after clean surgery
  • Common elective and emergency operations for common hand conditions
  • Melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer
