Dr Martin Stevens

Profile

I am a research fellow in the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine. I have previously worked as a research fellow at the University of Aberdeen Epidemiology group and The University of Southampton’s MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit. I gained my PhD in 2022 which explored the relationship between work factors and retirement decisions. I have a wide career history including roles in law, retail, and tax. I have found that my transferrable skills from prior roles have been an asset in my research career to date.

Research interests

I am a mixed-methods researcher with experience using both qualitative and quantitative methods in public health research, including pain, work, rheumatology/MSK and patient involvement. In my current role as a research fellow at the University of Leeds I work on the D-MAPP study (developing an app intervention for people with distal upper limb musculoskeletal disorders), and the Nuffield foundation/Versus Arthritis funded ARISE study (exploring arthritis work and wellbeing). I have experience of leading studies as a CI ( https://www.abdn.ac.uk/iahs/academic/epidemiology/our-research/studies-list/iprepare/) and using numerous methods such as qualitative interviews and focus groups, questionnaire design, Delphi methods, think aloud studies and working with patient research partners in every phase of study delivery.
