Dr Julia Sandrin Gauer

Profile

I obtained my PhD from the University of Leeds in 2017. I then joined the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM) and the group of Prof. Robert Ariëns on a project investigating the interaction of GPVI with fibrin(ogen) at a molecular level, in collaboration with Prof. Steve Watson. In 2021, I was awarded a Mautner BHF Career Development Fellowship where I explored the contributions of GPVI-fibrin interaction on the development of procoagulant platelets and the generation of a pro-thrombotic clot phenotype. My current research, supported by the BHF and NIHR Leeds BRC, focuses on modulating fibrin clot structure and platelet procoagulant response to reduce thrombosis/thromboinflammation by investigating the potential therapeutic role of 1. small synthetic proteins (Affimers) targeting fibrin(ogen) aC-region and 2. dietary antioxidant compounds.

  • Interim Lead of Phlebotomy and Blood Processing Suites
  • MSc Cardiovascular Health and Disease Blood Strand Lead
  • FMH Academic Personal Tutor

Research interests

1 in 4 people die of causes related to blood clots, making it the leading cause of death worldwide.

By better understanding of the risk factors associated with the development of blood clots more effective preventative strategies can be implemented. This is not only the focus of my research but something I am deeply passionate about, both professionally and personally.

My research focuses on understanding the mechanisms involved in the development of thrombosis and how to prevent thrombosis from occuring without increasing patients’ risk of bleeding.
