Dr Gillian Proctor

Profile

Programme leader of the MA in Psychotherapy and Counselling, Gillian has extensive experience working in the NHS as a clinical psychologist for 22 years, with adults in services from primary care to forensic services. She has contributed to thinking and practice in critical and community psychology, as a member of the Centre for Citizenship and Community Mental Health at Bradford University for many years. She set up a service for people who self-injure which was awarded a Health Service Journal prize for innovation in primary care and was highly commended by the Secretary of State.

She is an author of numerous books, book chapters and articles, focussing specifically on ethics, politics and practice in counselling and psychotherapy. She has provided training nationally for counsellors and other health care professionals on issues of power and ethics in therapy. This places her in an excellent position to lead a course focusing on values and ethics in relationships and how these inform decisions about how to be a therapist rather than following model-specific rules. She has provided research supervision for students at all levels at many different institutions, with a particular interest in power and reflexivity and accounting for the position of the researcher.MA in Psychotherapy and CounsellingStaff Profile for Dr Gillian Proctor, School of Healthcare, University of Leeds
