Suzanne Monks

Profile

Suzanne is a registered Adult Nurse with over 20 years of experience spanning clinical practice, higher education and educational leadership. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing, a Master's degree in Health Care Studies, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education. She is also a Senior Fellow of Advance HE, recognising her sustained leadership and contribution to learning and teaching in higher education.

Her academic career has focused on nursing education, student experience, and end-of-life and palliative care. Prior to joining the University of Leeds, she held Lecturer and Senior Lecturer positions at Sheffield Hallam University and worked as an End of Life Care Facilitator within health services. Her teaching, scholarship and leadership activities continue to bridge clinical practice and higher education, with a particular focus on curriculum innovation, student partnership, and the development of compassionate, evidence-informed healthcare professionals.

Student education

Suzanne Monks is a Lecturer in Adult Nursing and Associate Director of Student Education forStudent Experience in the School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds. A registered Adult Nurse and Senior Fellow of Advance HE, she is an experienced educator and educational leader with particular expertise in student experience, curriculum development, student and staff partnership and end-of-life and palliative care education.

Her role encompasses teaching, assessment, academic advising, dissertation supervision, and support for students' academic and professional development across healthcare programmes. Suzanne is committed to creating inclusive and engaging learning environments that promote belonging, confidence, and success. She has led a range of initiatives to strengthen student voice, feedback, communication, peer support, and partnership working, contributing to improvements in student experience across the School.

Alongside her university responsibilities, Suzanne has a strong national profile in end-of-life and palliative care education. She contributes to professional education, workforce development, and policy through leadership roles with the Royal College of Nursing Pain and Palliative Care Forum and as Chair of the Yorkshire and Humber End of Life Care Facilitators Network. Her scholarly work focuses on nursing education, student experience, and palliative care, and she regularly contributes to publications, educational resources, and national and international conferences.
