Ms Jessica Bruce

Profile

I qualified as Midwife at University of Kingston and St Georges University of London in 2012.

Following qualification I completed a 12 month preceptorship programme at Derby Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust which included rotations to the Delivery Suite, Birth Centre, Antenatal and Postnatal Ward.

Following gaining my Band 6 I transferred to Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust where I worked as a rotational Band 6 between a stand-alone and along-side Birth Centre and Delivery Suite. This enabled me to gain a vast experience in caring for service users in both high and low risk birth settings.

During 2020 to 2021 I was seconded to the Governance Department and supported in identifying serious incidents, reviewing cases and completing reports to improve care and safety of families accessing services.

I have been involved in developing tools to support midwives decision making and facilitate discussions with service users about their options and choices available to them within their care pathway. I have also provided training in area specific obstetric emergency scenarios to give my colleagues the opportunity to keep skills and knowledge relevant.

I have gained further qualifications to ensure continuity of care to families accessing care on the Birth Center by completing Newborn and Infant Physical Examination which led to improvement of service users experience within the trust.

I am passionate about supporting those accessing maternity services but also my colleagues in the work place and have completed the A-EQUIP Professional Midwifery Advocate course in order to develop my knowledge and understanding of how to facilitate effective, open discussions.

More recently I have joined the University as a Midwifery Tutor where I hope to continue my interest in making a positive improvement to services, through providing safe and effective training, preparing student midwives for the workplace and supporting them in the transition to a qualified midwife. I am currently working towards my FHEA recorded teachable qualification.
