Rasch Courses

Course overview

All Rasch courses are now offered in an online format (see below). There are currently no plans to run any in-person courses, but this situation may change at some point in the future. Please keep an eye on this page for any updates, or please let us know if you would like to be added to a mailing list regarding any further Rasch course news or announcements.

If you have any queries relating to the courses, then please contact Angela Greenbank (A.Greenbank@leeds.ac.uk) for administrative enquires or Mike Horton (m.c.horton@leeds.ac.uk) for course-content related enquiries.

Introduction to Rasch Analysis

ONLINE Introductory Rasch Analysis using RUMM2030 Course – Jan-March 2023

A workshop to introduce Rasch analysis using RUMM2030 software. This course will suit those working in the measurement of outcomes in the health sciences, of attitudinal data in the social sciences, or in educational testing. It will take the form of an online workshop introducing the Rasch measurement model and the Rasch Unidimensional Measurement Models (RUMM2030) software package. The workshop will be delivered fully online through a combination of pre-recorded teaching videos, exercises, and interactive live sessions over a number of weeks, from 25th January – 8th March 2023, inclusive. The course will be delivered through Microsoft Teams.

At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to analyse and interpret data, using RUMM2030, for:

  • Input of data into the RUMM2030 programme

  • Testing for local dependency and unidimensionality assumptions

  • Assessing scaling characteristics and fit to the Rasch model

  • Examining the category probability patterns for polytomous items

  • Examining the targeting and reliability of the scale or test

  • Assessing Differential Item Functioning

  • Assessing Response Dependence

Course requirements

  • Access to a computer running a pre-installed Evaluation Edition of RUMM 2030 (which we will provide) or a full version of RUMM 2030

NB – Please note that administrative rights are necessary to install RUMM onto a computer, so this installation will need to be done in advance of the course (by your institutional IT departments) if you do not have admin rights on your computer.

NB – Please note that RUMM 2030 is a Windows-only software package. If you wish to run it on a Mac, then this needs to be done through a Windows emulator package

  • Access to a computer running Microsoft Excel

  • Access to SPSS software is also preferable, but not necessary

Additional Details

The workshop will be hosted on the Microsoft Teams platform, but all materials will also be accessible outside of the Teams environment.

Please note that although participation in all sessions is encouraged, the live sessions will be recorded and access to these recordings will be provided to all participants after the session.

Following registration, more information will be sent to participants in due course.

Please see below for dates, price and booking information.

Intermediate and Advanced Rasch Analysis Courses

We are pleased to offer a new ONLINE Intermediate/Advanced Rasch Analysis using RUMM Course.

This course builds on the Introductory Rasch Analysis using RUMM2030 Course, progressing and advancing the base that was developed during the Introductory Course (a prerequisite). Some Rasch Measurement Theory topics will be expanded and developed, whereas others will be newly introduced. This is a practical course which aims to aid the Rasch practitioner, in terms of how best to carry out a Rasch analysis, and how to present the findings. We will discuss topics such as analyses ordering, DIF issues, local dependency, anchoring, data simulation and longitudinal data. This course will primarily use examples from the health sciences, but it will also suit those working in the measurement of outcomes of attitudinal data in the social sciences or in educational testing, as well as those working in health sciences and with PROMs.

It is assumed that participants will have some familiarity with the RUMM2030 software, therefore all participants are expected to have completed the introductory course or have experience with the RUMM2030 software.

Please note that the Intermediate and Advanced Rasch Courses were previously offered separately. We have, however, amended the format so that we are now offering only this single Intermediate/Advanced Course, which signifies the progression from the Introductory Course.

Based on feedback from previous online courses, the planned format is that this course will run over 5 weeks, with one online interactive group session a week (2 hours), with guided self-learning using pre-prepared materials in between the weekly sessions.
