Profile
I completed my undergraduate medical training at the University of Cambridge in 2018, having also undertaken an intercalated BA in Biological & Biomedical Sciences (Experimental Psychology, Developmental Neuroscience). Following my undergraduate training, I completed two years of the Academic Foundation Programme at Bradford Royal Infirmary and St James’ University Hospital in 2020, and then the Core Psychiatry training scheme in West Yorkshire in 2023. I am currently a Higher Trainee (ST4) in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
I first joined the University as Visiting Clinical Research Fellow in the Division of Psychological & Social Medicine, Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, in 2019. After completing the Academic Foundation Programme, I secured an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in Psychiatry at the University from 2021-2024. During this time, I completed a PGCert and PGDip in Health Research at the University of Leeds.
Research interests
I am an early career researcher and my research interests include self-harm, suicide prevention, health services, emergency psychiatry and unexplained symptoms, particularly in children and young people. I have been involved in several projects of interest during my postgraduate training and I have 10 peer-reviewed publications.
In August 2024, I began an NIHR-funded Doctoral Fellowship within the Division of Psychological & Social Medicine, Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. My PhD project is called:
Emergency Care After Self-Harm (EmCASH): what works for young people, why, and in what circumstances?
I am using a realist approach to provide an in-depth understanding of how emergency care is currently sought by and delivered to young people after they self-harm, and how it can be improved and organised to better meet the needs of patients and services. Further information can be found on the EmCASH study website: https://www.emcashresearch.co.uk/.
My other ongoing research projects include:
- Prevalence of common mental health disorders in adults who are high or costly users of healthcare services: a systematic review and meta-analysis. 2021-
- Presentations and outcomes of people with unexplained symptoms in acute general surgery: a mixed methods study. £179,492, funded by Leeds Hospitals Charity. 2023-
- Review of rapid tranquilisation guidelines across NHS Trusts in England. 2023-
- A pilot study to explore the acceptability of the Comprehensive Assessment of At-Risk Mental States (CAARMS) for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). £2,800, funded by Leeds & York Partnership Charitable Fund. 2024-
- Reliability of tachycardia as an early warning sign in acute clozapine-induced cardiac inflammation: a systematic review. 2025-
- How do the functions of eating disorder behaviours compare with those characteristic of self-harm? A qualitative evidence synthesis. 2025-
