Edith Pechey Lecture 2026 - “Training tomorrow’s doctors: current challenges & future prospects”

Leeds MedChi Society in partnership with the School of Medicine Athena Swan, commemorates one of Britain’s first female doctors with the Edith Pechey Lecture 2026

Mary Edith Pechey was only the third woman to be registered as a doctor in Britain and a campaigner for women's rights. Pechey practised medicine in Leeds, involving herself in women's health education and lecturing on a number of medical topics, including nursing.

This year Professor Sue Carr, Former Deputy Medical Director at the General Medical Council. Sue will be talking about “Training tomorrow’s doctors: current challenges & future prospects”

The General Medical Council appointed Professor Sue Carr in April 2019 as its first deputy medical director, a newly-created post to help shape future education and training for doctors. She was also director of medical education and associate medical director at the University Hospitals of Leicester and has worked as a consultant nephrologist in Leicester since 1995. After completing a Master's Degree in Clinical Education in 2005, she was elected to the Royal College of Physicians Council in 2017.
