Monty Losowsky Memorial Lecture 2024
Almost 100 students, staff, alumni and museum staff attended the 2024 Monty Losowsky Memorial Lecture competition. Pictured finalists – Hajar Gumaa (3rd), Shan Sunny (Winner), Olivia James (2nd).
The enjoyable annual event celebrates the work of the late Professor Monty Losowsky, a former Dean of Medicine at the University of Leeds and is hosted by the School of Medicine and the Thackray Museum of Medicine. Prizes are kindly sponsored by OneMedical Group and the Thackray Medical Medicine Research Trust.
The evening featured three stimulating and thought-provoking lectures delivered by three students from the School of Medicine and a fascinating and eye-opening keynote speech from Global Health Specialist Dorcas Gwata titled: 'Working with young people affected by gangs, youth violence, exploitation and poor mental health, a global health approach'.

The judging panel comprised of representatives from the Thackray Museum of Medicine and Leeds School of Medicine: Dr Hamish McLure, Edward Appleyard, Nosober Latif, Dr Katy Paradine and Chris Mannion. Initially, judging was deadlocked with Judging Panel Chairman Dr McLure describing the contest as ‘exceedingly close’. However, MBChB student Shan Sunny triumphed with his compelling lecture: “The Dark History of Medical Experimentation: Clinical Care Lessons from Unethical Studies” and was presented with a winner’s cheque for £1,000, a certificate and commemorative medal.
Runners up were MBChB students Olivia James with her lecture: “Faces of the future: Improving lives through facial transplantation” and Hajar Gumaa who presented “Medical Apartheid: Does it really exist?”. Fortunately, Olivia and Hajar did not leave empty handed and received runner up prizes of £500 and £250 respectively.
