Profile

Jane Wardman gained a degree in Dental Surgery from the University of Newcastle in 2001.  In 2007, she completed an MDentSci in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Leeds School of Dentistry.  She obtained her Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2003 and Membership of the Faculty of Dental Trainers in 2017.  She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  In 2020 Jane was awarded her PhD which was in the field of leadership education for dentistry.

Jane has held posts within the School of Dentistry since 2002; as a Senior House Officer in Restorative Dentistry, Clinical Tutor in the programme of Dental Hygiene and Therapy and as Clinical Teaching Fellow and Clinical Lecturer in the undergraduate Dental Surgery programme. She is currently a Clinical Associate Professor with involvement in both clinical and non-clinical teaching.

Jane has experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, has led the development and introduction of taught courses in the areas of communication skills and ethics and has developed and introduced modular based assessment into the Leeds BChD programme. She has held the roles of module lead and lead for the BChD/ MChD Programmes, Year 3 OSCE Lead and the role of Associate Director for Student Education (Quality Assurance).  She is currently the Director of Student Education with responsibility for all taught programmes (undergraudate and postgraduate) in the School.

Jane is an examiner for the MFDS Part 2 Assessment and is a member of the MFDS Advisory Board, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.  She was External Examiner for the School of Dental Science, University of Dublin, Trinity College (2013- 2016).

Her main interest is in dental education.  She holds a University of Leeds Developmental Student Education Fellowship and was awarded an Early Career Certificate of Excellence Award and a 40th Anniversary Scholarship Award from the Association for Dental Education in Europe.

Research interests

I am a member of the School's Dental Education Research and Scholarship Group.  My research focuses on the areas of leadership and professionalism development as well as OSCE assessment and feedback.  I have a particular interest in qualitative research methodology.
