Profile
I am Professor of Biological Physics and Biomineralisation in the School of Dentistry. Prior to this I was a Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London (2009-2019), and before that I held an EPSRC Life Science Interface Fellowship at the University of Leeds (2006-2009), having obtained my BSc and PhD from the School of Physics and Astronomy at Leeds (2005). I am a physicist who carries out internationally recognised research in the highly interdisciplinary research fields of biomineralisation and biomimetic materials, working at the interface of physics, materials, biology, biomedicine and dentistry. I am a world-leading expert in understanding the physico-chemical processes and spatial and temporal structural changes occurring during dental enamel biomineralisation, demineralisation and remineralisation. Equally, I make globally recognised contributions to transforming this knowledge into biomimetic approaches to repair and replace lost dental hard tissues. Specifically, my expertise lies in combining in-house biophysical techniques with use of international advanced science facilities (synchrotron and neutron scattering techniques) to drive forward our understanding of hard tissue structures at multiple length-scales and interactions at protein-mineral interfaces to enable translation to innovative clinical applications.
Responsibilities
- Head of Biomineralisation Research Group (School of Dentistry)
