Mr. Timothy Zoltie is Head of the Medical & Dental Illustration Department, based within the School of Dentistry, in a collaborative role with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He is an award-winning professional photographer and videographer, in the speciality area of medicine and dentistry. He qualified with a BA (Hons) degree in 2003, before becoming a qualified medical photographer in 2008 after completing a PGCert in clinical photography from Staffordshire University. Having then spent 10 years at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, he moved to provide operational management of the Medical Illustration Service and the team who support the delivery of illustration and clinical photography for NHS clinical care and academic activities based within the School of Dentistry. The department now offers photography, video, design, illustration, poster printing and 3D facial imaging, and is one of the busiest dental photography departments in the country.  

He is Chief Editor of the Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine, which is an international, peer reviewed medical journal that promotes effective use of communications media to improve healthcare. He has multiple published papers in the area of medical photography and has spoken at national and international conferences. He also provides medico-legal photography UK wide, and is an occasional writer for the Law Gazette. His healthcare photography work has led to commissions from NHS England, Health Education England and various national health institutions and NHS trusts.

Student education

Timothy Zoltie runs annual workshops on dental photography for undergraduate dental students, delivering both practical and theory workshops on areas such as intra oral photography, photographic ethics, and consent. He also teaches in core undergraduate modules on the use of film and video in documenting personal development.
