Dr El Mostafa Raïf

Profile

El Mostafa Raif (EMR) gained a first class Degree in Chemistry,  Physics and Maths in 1987 and a first class Degree in Biochemistry/ Cell Biology/ genetics in 1990. In 1993 he completed his PhD at the University of Bordeaux, France, obtaining a distinction with special congratulations from the jury, where he studied “Molecular Interfaces in the Extracellular Matrix of Mature Human Bone”.

From 1993-1997 EMR held a position as Head of Genetic Toxicology at LEMI (a French Company specialising in biological evaluation of biomaterials, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products). During his four years of employment at LEMI his main responsibility was the in vitro testing of biomaterials and medical devices. This included the development and application of new tests in genetic toxicology, cytotoxicity and specific protein synthesis.

In 1998 EMR carried study on behalf of Pfizer Ltd in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Nottingham in order to investigate the uptake of nanoparticle drug carriers to the liver by hepatoma cells.

In 1999 he was involved in a project of research at the University of Newcastle (Department of Human Genetics) where he achieved the sequencing of Neuroligin I gene.

From 2001-2007 EMR held a postdoctoral position at the University of Leeds in collaboration with Xiros Plc where he led projects in tissue engineering of ligaments.

From 2007 until 2016 EMR was a manager for the Tissue Culture & Bioengineering Facilities in Dentistry, University of Leeds, with the main responsibility being the management of the ethical and regulatory issues for research on medical devices. EMR’s current position is Lecturer and Senior Research Fellow at Oral Biology, School of Dentistry, Leeds. To date EMR has supervised ten students; seven of whom have successfully completed their PhD, two are their second year and one is in his first year
