Andy Clegg awarded NIHR Research Professorship

Andy Clegg, Professor of Geriatric Medicine in Leeds has been awarded a NIHR Research Professorship, only the third person in Leeds ever to have been successful in doing so.

The prestigious NIHR Research Professorships scheme funds and supports research leaders of the future. It aims to strengthen and benefit health, public health and care research leadership.

This year, the leading researchers will receive five-year awards of up to £2million. will receive a package of extensive support, including three support positions and access to a leadership and development programme.

Andy is the Head of Ageing and Stroke Research at the University and Honorary Consultant Geriatrician at Bradford Royal Infirmary. He is also Theme Lead in the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Yorkshire & Humber, Co-Director for Health Data Research UK North, and workstream co-lead in the NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre. His award is linked to his nationally-leading ageing research, which has had a major impact on UK and international health policy and practice.

 He said, “I am delighted to be awarded this NIHR Research Professorship, which will focus on maximising independence for older people in community and hospital settings as a UK and global priority. I am extremely grateful to the many colleagues across the University who supported the application, giving their time generously as part of the application development. I am also extremely grateful for the generous support package from the University that has been made available through the award, demonstrating a commitment to investment in applied ageing research as a national priority area. The support from the University is complemented by the great support from colleagues at Bradford Teaching Hospitals as the partner NHS organisation for the Research Professorship.”
